Sture Carlsson elected as President of Pearle
At the General Assembly meeting of the members of Pearle, Sture Carlsson from the Swedish Performing Arts Association, has been unanimously elected as the President of Pearle.

New board elected at 37th Pearle conference
At the 37th Pearle conference in Geneva, which took place on 29 and 30 May, the members of Pearle elected a new board for a term of 2 years. President will be Matti HOLOPAINEN, who is also the Managing director of the Finnish Theatre Association. He is succeeding Richard Pulford, who has served two subsequent terms of two years each as President of Pearle. Richard Pulford is the Chief Executive of Solt/TMA.

Informal briefing on cultural mobility
On 2 April, Pearle held a small informal briefing on 'European cultural mobility'. The meeting in Brussels gathered representatives from European and national associations and networks from different parts of Europe. It was an initiative in the framework of the European project, of which Pearle is a partner, "See Mobile See Practical -on the networking of existing structures supporting mobility in different cultural sectors, supported by the European Commission.

Pearle* offers vacancy for a part-time European legal adviser
Pearle is looking for a part-time legal adviser (19h/week) to assist the Director in day-to-day work. You will in particular work on EU policies and regulatory framework connected to the 'live performance' sector. Besides you will also be involved in the other activities initiated by Pearle*.

Publication 'State on Stage' - The impact of public policies on the performing arts in Europe
State on Stage tunes in on the relationship between governments and performing arts in European countries over the past fifteen years. In order to survive, performing arts organizations in Europe must adapt to ongoing changes in the artistic, commercial and political climate. Although maximizing market revenues has become business as usual for companies and venues, most still require substantial involvement from the government.

EU Trade agreement with Cariforum includes Cultural cooperation protocol
Last February the EU concluded its first Trade agreement which includes a Cultural Protocol. This is the result of the implementaiton of the Unesco convention on cultural diversity which has been taken into account in the Trade policy of the European Commission.

Proposal for amendments to report on cultural industries
Pearle* supports the proposals made in the report, against the background of the Communication on a European agenda for culture in a globalising world, whereby special attention is paid to one of the objectives in the Communication. Representing those responsible for the ëcreationí of art and culture, Pearle* believes that it is necessary to take account of cultural industries in all their aspects and diversity, thereby avoiding focusing too much on one particular sector within the cultural industries. Therefore Pearle* suggests a number of amendments to the draft report.

proposal for directive on sanctions against employers of illegally staying third-country nationals
Pearle supports the objectives of the Commission to fight against illegal immigration, but calls upon special provisions for the sector. These should take into consideration the dynamics of the sector, where third-country nationals are often employed at very short notice.

Report on 'impediments to mobility in the EU live performance sector and on possible solutions'
As part of the project 'mobile.home', a European project supported by the European Commission in the framework of the 'European year on mobility of workers 2006', Pearle conducted a research on problems related to mobility in the performing arts sector. The study describes the 4 main areas causing obstacles to mobility in the sector and suggests solutions.

In May 2006 the EU DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities has selected the MOBILE.HOME project of IETM, the Finnish Theatre Information Centre, Pearle*, Goethe-Institut (Brussels), Visiting Arts, www.on-the-move.org and associated partners and awarded them with the sum of 163.793,17 Euro for this mobility awareness raising project. The European Commission has named 2006 the European Year of Workersí Mobility. The year aims to raise awareness and increase understanding of the benefits of both working abroad and in a new occupation.

7 copyright users' organisations flag up rights users concerns in joint publication and seminar
Next June 20th in Brussels, seven associations participating in the Copyright Users Platform (CUP) will be presenting a joint publication describing some of the concerns and risks which copyright users are increasingly being confronted with. These seven organisations are: ACT, AER, ECCA, EBU, EICTA, HOTREC and PEARLE*. The publication is intended to present in a non-exhaustive way, information on the rights that different users need and insight into some of the urgent issues currently at stake.
